Eclectically and rather fittingly, Spartacus R consists of a builder, a logician, an electrical engineer as well as three professional musicians. Connoisseurs of fine instruments, the Wellington six-piece have an unquantifiable energy for crafting music; at times raw and wild, other times achingly beautiful, and always uncompromised to its core.

Having refined their sound and gathered their beautiful gear for around six years now, Spartacus R have released two EPs, an acclaimed debut album (When the Fever Takes Hold, 2009), and toured the country on several outlandish musical journeys.

This December, follow the piper, drift down the rabbit hole and dine with Spartacus R on their sophomore album, "The View".

Opening with the sound of a distant bell, The View’s first track and lead single, “Rapata”, heralds your arrival to the Spartacus R musical realm, a world of vying dualities. Before long, you’re submerged in a swathe of guitars that bubble urgently and overflow into a hypnotically haywire and feverish cosmic trip.

Second track and follow up single, “Mutant Musings”, which oddly sounds like The B52’s, is set for release in the coming weeks and will be accompanied by a bizarre yet compelling stop-start animated video directed by American filmmaker, Jacob Perkins.

On “Milk and Cookies”, a beguiling concoction of psychedelia, hedonism and surrealism is blended, leaving you disoriented and euphoric. Intricate musicianship and charismatic vocals reminiscent of Jim Morrison at his most visionary make for a perfectly crafted, kaleidoscopic ramble.

Creative vanguards, Spartacus R’s theatrical credentials are impeccable and the band has conjured a reputation for fascinating, one-off shows. At Fringe 07 they presented Spartacus R in Octophonic. The following year at Fringe 08, Spartacus R in 3D combined live music with atmospheric 3D visuals in the Paramount. They also performed with poet, Ben Brown, in a special multi-media show at Downstage as part of the Soundstage Series.

Renowned for their varied collaborations, Spartacus R has worked on a range of projects with a bevy of creatives, including: Chilean filmmaker, Franko VR; Auckland artist, Emil McAvoy; architect, Barnaby Bennett; designer, Hana Miller; filmmaker, Giles McNeill; and artist, Kahu Scott.

To kick start celebrations and suitably launch the album, a series of listening parties have been sporadically held across the globe. Locations include the musical Mecca’s and cultural hubs of Wellington, Paris, Melbourne, London, Bern (Switzerland) and Greymouth. Keep an eye out on Spartacus R’s facebook page to find out where the next one will be.
